Spotted: Attacks On Sites And Servers Using Shellshock Bug

Thousands of servers have been compromised via the new Shellshock bug, and there are millions of servers around the world using software that’s vulnerable to the bug. A series of attacks on websites and servers which are using this software has now been uncovered.

Attackers are creating botnets (networks of compromised machines) which are put to other uses; in this case, to throw huge quantities of data at web firms such as Akamai to force them offline.

Experts expect the number of attacks and compromises to continue to grow as code is shared. With early reports suggesting up to 500 million machines could be vulnerable to the bug.

Shellshock is a bug that has been found lurking in a tool called Bash, that’s used within the Unix operating system, Linux’s open source software and Apple’s OSX.

Some experts have stated that this bug has the potential to be more dangerous than the Heartbleed bug uncovered earlier this year.

Kasper Lindegaard from Secunia is reported as having told online tech publication The Register: “Heartbleed only enabled hackers to extract information, Bash enables hackers to execute commands to take over your servers and systems.”

However Apple has said it is working on a fix, and reportedly thinks most users will not be at risk from Shellshock.

As a business, it’s a good idea to be aware of the threats from potentially dangerous internet nasties like Shellshock. The UK government’s cybersecurity response team has, in fact, given Shellshock the highest possible threat ratings, with the US and Canada taking a similar approach.

Tech staff are being urged to ensure patches are implemented as quickly as possible. Security companies and researching are working to product signatures and filter lists in an attempt to spot attacks. Google, Amazon and other have released advisories to customers in relation to the bug.

Patches were released on Friday to help tech teams lock up their sites and systems.
